German football legend Franz Anton Beckenbauer has passed away at the age of 78.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Former German center back Beckenbauer won the World Cup as a player for West Germany in 1974 and won the World Cup as a coach for West Germany in 1990. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beckenbauer’s death was first announced by his family to German news agency DPA and then confirmed by the German football federation, the DFB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and our father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family,” the family said in its statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We ask that we be allowed to grieve in peace and be spared any questions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement did not provide a cause of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The former Bayern Munich great, who became affectionately known as the ‘Kaiser’ had struggled with health problems in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is one of the 3 to win World Cup football as a player and coach. Under his captaincy, the then West Germany won the World Cup in 1974 by defeating the Netherlands in the final. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
