Death toll from Venezuela earthquake reaches 1,719
The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Venezuela last week has reached 1,719. According to information released by the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, thousands of people have been affected, and rescue and relief efforts are still ongoing.
According to government figures, at least 22,619 people have been affected by the earthquake. Of these, 5,034 have been injured. 855 buildings have also been damaged, of which 189 have been destroyed.
Officials say 609 aftershocks have been felt since Wednesday. An aftershock was also felt widely on Monday, but no major damage was reported.
