Nepal’s first female PM Sushila Karki, know more about her

Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has become Nepal’s first female Prime Minister. Karki has become Nepal’s first female Prime Minister on the basis of the Gen Z Movement.

Sushila Karki is considered a historic figure in Nepal’s judicial history. She is also the first female Chief Justice of Nepal. She was appointed as the Chief Justice on Baisakh 11, 2073.

Her appointment thus opened a new door for gender equality not only in Nepal’s judiciary but also in the entire society. Sushila Karki was born in Bhojpur district. She completed her master’s degree in political science from Banaras Hindu University, India. She then studied law. After spending some time teaching, she entered the legal profession.

Judicial Journey:

  • She began her journey as a lawyer and was appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court in 2049 BS.
  • After nearly two decades of judicial service, she became a permanent transfer judge of the Supreme Court in 2070 BS and later a permanent judge.
  • She finally assumed the post of Chief Justice in 2073 BS.

Sushila Karki was known for her honest image, strong decisions, and impartiality. She made bold and historic decisions on issues including corruption, good governance, and human rights.

Her decisions have had a profound impact on the policy and administrative structures of the state. She is remembered as an influential judge not only within the judiciary but also during the country’s political transitional journey.

Her tenure was only about 10 months, but even in that short period, she contributed to making the judiciary strong and trustworthy. During his tenure, an impeachment motion was filed against him in parliament, which is considered very controversial.

However, many supported him because of his strict and impartial nature. Sushila Karki was not only a judge but also a symbol of women’s empowerment. She proved that women can reach the highest positions in the state with ability, honesty, and determination.

She made a bold decision in the case against Lokman Singh Karki, the then head of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority. This decision received a lot of attention in Nepal’s judicial history, and she was known as a ‘tough judge’. She was also always tough on human rights violations by the state.

She gave important orders to address the disappeared, victims of the conflict, and groups deprived of justice. Similarly, she played a role in holding ministries, government agencies, and public officials accountable according to the law.

Sushila Karki is not only the first female Chief Justice of Nepal,but she is also considered a courageous, impartial, and just person. However, he has been criticized for the controversial appointment of 80 judges during his tenure.
