Bhutanese refugee case- Two days extension to detain 16 arrested persons

Kathmandu District Court has allowed the police to detain 16 people arrested in the case of fake Bhutanese refugees for two more days. The court granted two more days after they were presented before it seeking an extension, said Sitaram Rijal, Superintendent of Police of District Police Kathmandu

The district attorney’s office now must register the case in court within the next two days. So far, 16 people including the former deputy prime minister and former home minister and the sitting government secretary have been arrested. In the refugee case, the police arrested 16 people, including the former minister and the current secretary.

In that incident, former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former Home Minister Balkrishna Khand, suspended Secretary (former Home Secretary) Tek Narayan Pandey, former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa’s security advisor Dr. Indrajit Rai were arrested and detained on different dates.

Among the others arrested are Bhutanese refugee leader Teknath Rijal, Nepal Haj Committee Chairman Shamsher Mia, former Speaker Angtawa Sherpa, then Home Minister Khand’s personal secretary Narendra KC, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi’s son Sandeep along with Keshav Dulal, Sanu Bhandari, Sandesh Sharma, Sagar Rai, Tank Gurung, Govinda Chaudhary and Ram Sharan KC.

On Monday, the police submitted its investigation report to the public prosecutor which stated that 17 more people, including Prateek, the son of former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal, and Neeraj, the son of Indrajit Rai, are absconding.

A total of 113 people have filed 22 complaints before the police saying that 275 million rupees were defrauded from them.
