Mexico beats South Africa 2-0 in World Cup opening match

Hosts Mexico have made a winning start to the tournament by defeating South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the World Cup. Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scored a goal each for Mexico in the match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Thursday.

Three red cards were shown in the competitive match. Mexico took the lead in the ninth minute, when South Africa’s Spefelo Sithole made a mistake in controlling the ball after a goal kick, and Quinones took advantage of it with a brilliant shot.

South Africa suffered another setback towards the end of the match. Themba Zwane was sent off for an unnecessary foul, and the team was reduced to nine men.

Meanwhile, with moments left in the game, Mexico’s Cesar Montes was also shown a red card by the referee for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
