Germany registered a comprehensive 7-1 win over Curacao

Four-time World Cup winners Germany made an impressive start to their opening Group E match, defeating debutant Curacao 7-1. Germany took the lead in the sixth minute of the match, with Felix Nemcha scoring the fastest goal of the tournament so far with a beautiful curling shot from Florian Wirtz’s excellent pass.

But Curaçao, the smallest nation in World Cup history by area and population, stunned Germany with an equalizer in the 21st minute. Zurich midfielder Livano Comenencia’s shot beat German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and went into the net.

Neuer, 40, became the country’s oldest international player, playing in his fifth World Cup. After a brief period of pressure after the equalizer, Germany regained their rhythm. Nico Schlotterbeck headed home a corner kick to give the team the lead again.

Then, in first-half stoppage time, Kai Havertz converted a penalty to give Germany a comfortable 3-1 lead.  Jamal Musiala added a fourth goal 69 seconds into the second half. Nathaniel Brown then volleyed home and substitute Dennis Undav added another.

Undav also set up Havertz in the dying moments to seal a 7-1 victory for Germany. This victory equals the historic 7-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup. Germany also surpassed Brazil to become the team with the most goals in World Cup history, with a total of 239 goals.
