South Africa advances to the knockout stage after beating South Korea
South Africa has made history by qualifying for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time. They reached the last 16 after defeating South Korea 1-0 in a group stage match in Monterrey.
A second-half goal from Thapelo Maseko proved decisive. The win moved South Africa into second place in the table, while Mexico remained top.
Defeated South Korea is now in the hunt for a place in the top three. There were not many exciting moments throughout the game. South Africa adopted a defensive strategy and looked for opportunities on the counterattack, while South Korea, despite maintaining control of the ball, could not perform effectively in the final stages of the attack.
The decisive goal came in the second half of the match. Maseco, after controlling the ball inside the penalty area, fired a left-footed shot through the opposition player’s legs and into the net. Earlier, the most exciting moment in the stadium was witnessed by the green-clad Mexican fans, who were present as neutral spectators. They celebrated their team’s goal against the Czech Republic.
South Korea, despite having most of the possession, failed to create any clear-cut chances. Apart from a weak header from Oh Hyun-gyu and an early shot from Lee Kang-in, they did not pose much of a threat. Meanwhile, South Africa—looking dangerous on the counter-attack—created excellent chances throughout the match and fully deserved the victory.
Having qualified for the tournament for the first time since hosting the World Cup on home soil in 2010, South Africa had previously finished third in the group stage in all their prior World Cup appearances. This time, however, they have made history by securing a spot in the knockout stage for the first time.
