Ronaldo scores twice as Portugal beat Uzbekistan
Aided by two goals from captain Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal secured an impressive 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. With this feat, Ronaldo has become the first player to score in six consecutive editions of the World Cup.
Ronaldo, 41, set a new record in the sixth minute of the match by converting a Joao Cancelo cross into a half-volley at the near post. With the goal, he also became the second-oldest player to score at a World Cup. The previous record was set by Cameroon’s Roger Milla against Russia in 1994 at the age of 42.
Portugal, who were criticised after a 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their opening match of the tournament, put in a fine performance against Uzbekistan, who are making their first appearance at the World Cup. Portugal doubled their lead in the 17th minute when Nuno Mendes’ free kick from around 20 yards went straight into the net.
Uzbekistan looked to have pulled one back through Aziz Ganiev, but the goal was disallowed after Abosbek Fayzullayev was found to have fouled Cancelo. Ronaldo then scored his second and third goals for the team in the 39th minute. After Bruno Fernandes provided a great pass from the middle, Ronaldo easily slotted the ball into the corner of the net.
