FIFA WC: Uruguay held to a draw by Saudi Arabia
Maxi Araujo’s late goal earned Uruguay a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia in their opening match of World Cup Group H.
Saudi Arabia, who stunned the world by defeating eventual champions Argentina in their first match at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, came close to another historic victory this time too.
But they could not withstand Uruguay’s constant pressure in the second half until the end. Saudi Arabia took the lead with four minutes left in the first half, when Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera saved Hassan Al Tambakhti’s powerful header from a corner.
Still, the rebound was headed home by Abdullah Al Amri. Saudi Arabia then began to dream of another historic victory. But after the break, Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa made two changes. In the process, former Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was taken off, which added new energy to the team.
