Germany is eliminated from the FIFA World Cup, and Paraguay advances
Four-time world champions Germany have been eliminated from the FIFA World Cup. Germany’s World Cup journey ended with a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat after a 1-1 draw with Paraguay in extra time.
In a thrilling penalty shootout, Germany’s Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemadeh had their shots saved by Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gil. However, Paraguay also failed to capitalize on its early opportunities. Antonio Sanabria’s shot went off the post, and Fabian Balbuena’s shot was saved by 40-year-old veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Paraguayan defender José Canale scored the decisive goal in sudden death to give his team a 4-3 penalty win after Germany’s Jonathan Tah’s shot went over the bar.
With the win, Paraguay advanced to the last 16 of the World Cup, while four-time champions Germany were unexpectedly eliminated from the tournament.
Paraguay will now face the winner of France or Sweden in the last 16.
